This presentation will discuss the resilience principles that integrate disaster management and strategic planning in a practical 'crisis strategic planning' framework. Included will be two case studies illustrating how organizations can avoid 'crisis myopia', finding instead the opportunities that frequently attend major crisis, yielding direct recovery benefits to the local community.
 
Speaker Bio

John is Co-Founder of the eSecurity Lab at the University of Canterbury and an active researcher in the Resilient Organizations Research Group. His interests focus on the conjunction of business practice and crisis management with an emphasis on building resilience in the face of systemic insecurity. His research interests include strategic planning, risk management and business continuity.


John’s interest in organizational resilience is the result of his long background in accounting, auditing and business information systems and has particular concern for the methodologies involved in protecting modern technology connected organizations against the broad range of systemic vulnerabilities, natural and man-made.

Co-Speaker Bio
Erica is a fellow researcher at the University of Canterbury and leads a six year FRST funded research program "Resilient Organizations". The research seeks to develop innovative strategies for improving the resilience of organizations to major crises. The Resilient Organizations program involves researchers from the University of Canterbury, University of Auckland, Unitec and Kestrel Group and continues through until 2010.

Erica is also director of Risk Strategies Research and Consulting, a small company specializing in bringing the principles of risk management, business continuity planning, and crisis management together into a common framework to maximize business resilience in the face of both foreseeable and unexpected challenges.
