Description
The capacity and capability of the Auckland region to reduce risk and to respond to a major disaster has been assessed. A structured, semi-quantitative assessment across a range of emergency management functions was undertaken. The presentation will discuss the methodology and its scope, and the importance of evaluation and performance monitoring in an emergency management context.
 
Speaker Bio

Michele Daly has over 15 years experience in natural hazard mitigation, risk reduction strategy development and emergency management. While working in the public sector, she has been involved in establishing a monitoring network for the Auckland Volcanic Field, worked with lifeline utilities in the Auckland region to reduce infrastructure vulnerability and worked to improve the use of planning tools to reduce risk.


Michele now works in the private sector and recent commissions have included implementation of a disaster management framework for Samoa, and an assessment of the capacity and capability of the Auckland region to respond to a disaster. She has undertaken a gap analysis across the region's local authorities with respect to risk reduction. She is also involved in a New Zealand government funded research project looking at defining and measuring a resilient community and is interested in benchmarking and performance assessment methodologies for emergency management.
