This case study outlines how a community in the Far North of New Zealand became fully engaged in the recovery process following two severe flooding events only months apart. The case study looks at successful strategies that were adopted and lessons that were learned. Community participation and commitment has strengthened the community's resilience to future flooding events.
 
Speaker Bio
Chris Webb is Head of Paramedic and Emergency Management and joined AUT in 2006. Chris’s passion for emergency management developed during his 4 ½ years with the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management. During his time at the Ministry he was responsible for enhancing community resilience and capability through effective professional development within the emergency management sector.

In consultation with stakeholders, Chris developed competency profiles for key emergency management personnel for recruitment and development purposes and this has led to genuine interest in the leadership traits required of key emergency management personnel. Chris has also facilitated emergency management workshops both nationally and within the Pacific region with key recommendations going to Pacific Nations government.

During the major flooding events of 2004/2005, Chris led the welfare function and assisted with the operations function in the National Emergency Operation Centre.
